  • Summary Of The Position

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Research Expert to join our team for a short-term assignment, the duration of the Project Inception Phase. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in undertaking research, data analysis, and report writing, with the ability to deliver high-quality research outputs (policy briefs). Experience working in Sub-Saharan Africa considered essential with prior experience in Zambia, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) being an asset.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design research interventions on topics relevant to the objectives and priorities of the project, including, but not limited to, the AfCFTA, challenges faced by women-led MSMEs and regional value chains.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret qualitative and quantitative data using a variety of research methods and techniques.
  • Prepare comprehensive research methodologies and tools to guide the approach to the research component of the program.
  • Prepare a list of potential activities aimed to support beneficiaries in all 3 target countries with an emphasis on their ability to undertake research on relevant thematic topics and dissemination of the research.
  • Collaborating and establishing connections with research institutions and/or think tanks to ensure project research activities are aligned with organizational goals and objectives and lists of potential project stakeholders is developed.
  • Stay abreast of current trends, developments, and emerging issues in relevant sectors, and incorporate this knowledge into research objectives.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to colleagues and partners on research-related matters, including research design, methodology, and data analysis.

Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a relevant field (such as Economics, Trade, Development Studies, Social Sciences, or a related discipline).
  • 10+ years’ experience in designing and delivering research programs in Africa, experience in DRC, Mozambique and/or Zambia considered an asset.
  • Experience of designing research initiatives focused on trade facilitation, regional value chains etc. would be beneficial.
  • Experience of working with national research agencies and institutions and think tanks.
  • Experience of undertaking on-the-ground primary research and delivering research/policy papers based on the findings.
  • Proven expertise in qualitative and quantitative research methods, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Excellent writing skills, with a track record of producing high-quality research reports and publications.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and communicate findings effectively.
  • Knowledge of implementing gender and social inclusion into research programmes.
  • Understanding of the AfCFTA would be desirable.
  • Understanding of Global Affairs Canada programs desirable.
  • Familiarity with research ethics and best practices for ensuring the integrity and validity of research findings.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in French and/or Portuguese is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel within the region, as needed.
