Purpose

The Scaffolder at the Mechanical Acid Plant within a Copper Smelter is responsible for erecting, maintaining, and dismantling scaffolding structures to ensure safe access for maintenance, construction, and inspection activities. The role requires adherence to safety regulations and standards specific to industrial environments, particularly within the context of handling acids and other hazardous materials.

Key Responsibilities

This position will be required to adhere in all relevant and needed policies and procedures under scaffolding, painting, and sheeting activities.  Included are legal regulations pertaining to safety health and environment. Company policies (Human Resources, Finance etc.) that are required by the organization relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the functions thereof.

  • To erect scaffolding, do painting and sheeting jobs.
  • Dismantle scaffolding structures once tasks are completed, ensuring the site is left safe and clean.
  • Regularly inspect scaffolding for stability and safety.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on scaffolding components to ensure they remain in safe working condition.
  • Follow all safety regulations and protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Ensure scaffolding is erected and used in compliance with relevant safety standards (e.g., OSHA).
  • Work closely with other tradespeople and site personnel to coordinate scaffolding needs.
  • Communicate effectively with site supervisors and other team members regarding scaffolding requirements and safety issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of scaffolding structures erected, inspected, and dismantled.
  • Document any safety incidents or near misses involving scaffolding.
  • Participate in regular safety training sessions.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices and new scaffolding techniques.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 School Certificate
  • Certificate in Scaffolding

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years in scaffold erection, painting, sheeting, including sand blasting.
  • Proven experience as a scaffolder in an industrial setting, preferably in a copper smelter or similar environment.
  • Familiarity with scaffolding in environments handling acids and hazardous materials is an asset.

  • The ability to plan and erect scaffolds.
  • Effective communication/comprehension skills verbal and written.
  • Physical requirement – the ability to work on heights and able to lift materials.  Familiar with the machineries involved like grinders, pouse drive, etc.
